Live benthic foraminiferal faunas from the French Mediterranean Coast: Towards a new biotic index of environmental quality ArchiMer
Barras, Christine; Jorissen, Frans J.; Labrune, Celine; Andral, Bruno; Boissery, Pierre.
In this study, living (Rose Bengal stained) foraminiferal faunas from 31 stations along the entire French Mediterranean Sea coast except Corsica have been analysed. In the context of the Water Framework Directive, the aim was to develop a biotic index to evaluate the benthic ecosystem quality. Therefore, different faunal parameters (diversity indices, wall structure proportion, and indicative species groups) have been tested to determine their relevance as indicators of environmental conditions. The best results are obtained with a biotic index based on the relative proportion of stress-tolerant taxa. For ecosystem quality evaluation, it is essential to distinguish between natural and anthropogenic eutrophication phenomena. In order to do so, we applied a...

Molecular analysis and new records of the invasive polychaete Boccardia proboscidea (Annelida: Spionidae) ArchiMer
Radashevsky, Vasily, I; Pankova, Victoria V.; Malyar, Vasily V.; Neretina, Tatyana, V; Wilson, Robin S.; Worsfold, Tim M.; Diez, Maria E.; Harris, Leslie H.; Hourdez, Stephan; Labrune, Celine; Houbin, Celine; Kind, Britta; Kuhlenkamp, Ralph; Nygren, Arne; Bonifacio, Paulo; Bachelet, Guy.
The spionid polychaete Boccardia proboscidea Hartman, 1940 is a tube-dweller and shell/stone-borer widely occurring in temperate waters across the world and considered invasive in many areas. It was originally described from California, USA, and later reported from Pacific Canada, the Asian Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, South Africa, and northern Europe. The Bayesian inference analysis of sequence data of three gene fragments (836 bp in total) of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA, nuclear 28S rDNA, and Historie 3 has shown that individuals from the Pacific coasts of Canada and the USA, Argentina, Australia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Mediterranean France were genetically very similar (maximal average p-distance value, 0.49%, was between...

Multiscale patterns in the diversity and organization of benthic intertidal fauna among French Atlantic estuaries ArchiMer

Based on a parallel sampling conducted during autumn 2008, a comparative study of the intertidal benthic macrofauna among 10 estuarine systems located along the Channel and Atlantic coasts of France was performed in order to assess the level of fauna similarity among these sites and to identify possible environmental factors involved in the observed pattern at both large (among sites) and smaller (benthic assemblages) scales. More precisely this study focused on unraveling the observed pattern of intertidal benthic fauna composition and diversity observed at among-sites scale by exploring both biotic and abiotic factors acting at the among- and within-site scales. Results showed limited level of similarity at the among-site level in terms of intertidal...

Regional and latitudinal patterns of soft-bottom macrobenthic invertebrates along French coasts: Results from the RESOMAR database ArchiMer
Gallon, Regis K.; Lavesque, Nicolas; Grall, Jacques; Labrune, Celine; Gremare, Antoine; Bachelet, Guy; Blanchet, Hugues; Bonifacio, Paulo; Bouchet, Vincent M. This study aims to describe the patterns of soft bottom macrozoobenthic richness along French coasts. It is based on a collaborative database developed by the “Réseau des Stations et Observatoires Marins” (RESOMAR). We investigated patterns of species richness in sublittoral soft bottom habitats (EUNIS level 3) at two different spatial scales: 1) seaboards: English Channel, Bay of Biscay and Mediterranean Sea and 2) 0.5° latitudinal and longitudinal grid. Total observed richness, rarefaction curves and three incidence-based richness estimators (Chao2, ICE and Jacknife1) were used to compare soft bottom habitats species richness in each seaboard. Overall, the Mediterranean Sea has the highest richness and despite higher sampling effort, the English Channel...
